Top 10 African Space Companies To Watch In 2022

For a long time, government agencies like NASA and the European Space Agency dominated the aerospace market. But with the emergence of new techniques and technologies, the private sector is more and more essential, seduced by the conquest of space.

Bold billionaires are investing in major projects like Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, with SpaceX, or Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon with Blue Origin. Start-ups from all over the world are also setting out to storm this universe by offering their solutions. Africans have not stood idly by in the face of this new trend. Many of them were interested in space and set up Startups / Companies working in the space field. Here is a list of the 10 companies to follow in 2022 on the space side.

  1. DragonFly Aerospace

Dragonfly Aerospace is a South African space company that creates high performance compact imaging payloads and satellites designed for large imaging constellations that will provide persistent views of Earth in a wide range of spectra enabling intelligence unprecedented business and improving the lives of people around the world. The Dragonfly Aerospace team has a solid background and heritage that dates back to the earliest Earth observation satellite missions which began in the 1980s and have worked on every microsatellite space mission since South Africa entered the space race.

  1. Eurêka Géo

Founded in 2013, DATAGIS Cameroon is a geomatics design office which has made it possible to popularize geomatics processes. With a solid experience in geomatics project management and capacity building in cartography and Geographic Information System, DATAGIS Cameroon created in 2017 "Eureka Geo". The latter is a professional training institute whose activities revolve around the federation of actors in the space ecosystem, research and development in the use of Earth observation data, and the promotion of creation of startups through space entrepreneurship.

The main mission of Eureka Geo is to develop a space program with training as the main activity, around which other activities are articulated, the results of which allow in the short, medium and long term to develop the space industry with its main segments: Earth observation, navigation and positioning, communications satellite, astronomy and space sciences.

  1. SCS Space

SCS Space (Pty) Ltd was founded in 2008 and today has grown into a trusted advisor, consulting clients on complex satellite technology solutions and supply chain systems. SCS Space was responsible for launching South Africa's first commercially developed nanosatellite, nSight-1, which was built on the space heritage of two pioneering microsatellites SunSat and SumbandilaSat. "The team is already working with all relevant South African stakeholders to achieve Nsight-2 in the next period, and progress has been made in this regard. GeoSmart is a South African company providing geospatial services. GeoSmart describes itself as finding solutions to geographic problems by combining out-of-the-box geospatial thinking with cutting-edge technologies, such as geographic information systems (GIS), Earth observation satellites, satellite systems global navigation (GNSS), mobile devices, cloud computing and artificial intelligence.

Most things such as people, resources, phenomena can be related to a position on or above the surface of the Earth. By knowing these positions and how they change over time; GeoSmart, with the slogan "Bring back space to earth", is on a mission to better understand how these things behave, behaved in the past and will behave in the future.

GeoSmart's vision is to demystify the perceived complexities of geospatial technologies and to provide simple products and services that effectively solve geographic problems.

Higher institutions such as Stanford University, Princeton, Georgia Tech, Caltech, CalPoly, University of Maine, Penn State and several NASA space grant consortium are using XinaBox CubeSat kits for their systems engineering program in because of its 4IR nature, and the links it creates between traditional space hardware and the skills required by the growing space industry in the not too distant future.

  1. NETLOXH

In the African space industry, Netloxh promises impressive growth, especially over the next four years. As African satellites are expected to increase, there is a growing demand for African countries to start launching rockets from the continent. In response to this, Netloxh, a South Africa-based company, promises to launch Africa's first satellite from the continent by 2021.

Netloxh Space does extensive research on the development, design and manufacture of rockets and spacecrafts.

  1. Luvhone Engineering and Consulting Partners (Pty) Limited

Luvhone Engineering and Consulting Partners (Pty) Limited is a South African company based in Johannesburg. Luvhone provides engineering products and services for satellite communication, information systems and aerospace. They allow owners to receive DStv entertainment services via satellite dish and related accessories. In the ICT space, Luvhone provides hardware infrastructure and develops applications for business efficiency.

Pty wants to be the preferred Pan-African engineering technology partner and producer. Pty owns intellectual properties in information communication technologies, aerospace and security technologies, which are specific to the African market and ready for export to global markets.

The mission of the company is to always understand and prioritize the needs of customers and employees, to establish win-win situations driven by an approach aimed at ensuring the achievement of the priorities and mutual interests of the organization and its stakeholders. Pty also wants to:

  • Building Intellectual Properties that can be commercialized for local consumption and the export market In the engine of economic growth
  • ETSE CubeCom

Since 1997, ETSE Electronics has been developing products for a wide range of customers and applications. These include solutions for space, military, agricultural and commercial applications. Initially, the company focused on the development of RF and microwave communication systems, but quickly expanded into other areas that require electronic hardware and on-board system solutions. Since 2014, the company has turned to developing and supporting its own product line. Two of the products, FarmRanger and FarmTrack, are agriculture-based, and one, CubeCom, is a space technology program focused on CubeSats.

  1. Omarichet

Omarichet is an Ethiopian start-up that focuses on the development of satellites for communication and navigation and position missions. The project aims to fill the gaps in an interconnected Africa by improving digital communications and location-based services. These interventions are now highly relevant given the global shift to digital infrastructure and the opening of borders to the movement of people, goods and services and intra-African trade fueled by the flagship of the AfCFTA . The first project emphasizes intensive capacity building in order to prepare a critical mass that will support the initiative.

  1. Simera Sense

Simera Sense introduces the highest Earth observation performance in the most compact form factor for nanosatellites. Its mission is to increase the details that can be detected with smaller satellites. They produce end-to-end optical payload solutions that solve their customers' earth observation challenges. The xScape100 product line moves its boundaries with an unprecedented leap in forward optical and sensor technologies. The large aperture diameter and long focal length in a compact form factor allow convincing spatial resolution for 3U and 6U Cubesats.

Thanks to their innovative technological solutions, these start-ups want to conquer the market which is still as fascinating as that of space.
