Professional Training in Africa

In several African countries, general education is no longer sufficient today. It must be recognized that many university graduates do not find work or work in a completely different field from the education they received.

"The continent's higher education graduates are two to three times more exposed to unemployment than young people who did not continue their education beyond primary school." according to the International Labor Organization. Faced with this problem, several African countries are resorting to the establishment of a fund for vocational training.

Several African countries have set up a Vocational Training Fund, some recently such as Madagascar with the Malagasy Vocational Training Fund, some already for a long time such as Senegal or even South Africa and we can clearly see how these evolve compared to other African countries. Vocational training funds are grouped together in the African Network of Vocational Training Institutions and Funds (RAFPRO) :

  • Support Fund for Vocational Training and Apprenticeship (FAFPA) Burkina Faso
  • Support Fund for Vocational Training and apprenticeship (FAFPA) Mali
  • Vocational Training(Development FundFDFP) Côte d'Ivoire
  • Central African Agency for Vocational Training (ACFPE) Central African Republic
  • Fund for Continuing Education and Apprenticeship(SupportFAFPCA) Niger
  • Fund for Financing of Vocational and Technical Training (3FPT) Senegal
  • National Fund for Support to Vocational Training (FONAP) Chad
  • National Fund for Learning, Training and Development (FNAFPP) Togo

By browsing the sites of these vocational training funds in Africa, we can clearly see that their establishment responds to a crying need for the competitiveness and productivity of 21 century enterprises through the training of their employees but also to want to offer a qualified workforce on the labor market and finally strengthen the skills of vulnerable people working in precarious and informal.

Still in the interest of developing African vocational training, the African Alliance for the Development of Vocational Training (ADEFOP) initiated in 2019 the first edition of the African Vocational Training Summit. This summit enabled the establishment of an action plan to take charge of the challenges of skills training and employability of young people, through a common African vision.

It was a question for the member countries of the African Alliance to examine and discuss the issues of the governance of vocational training in Africa, as well as its added value on the strengthening of human capital in Africa, through a vision common African.

The summit was marked by panels on the governance of the sector, monitoring and anticipation as well as engineering in the field of vocational training, but also the issue of certification. The Summit was sanctioned with a declaration and recommendations, which complement the Alliance's 2019-2021 Action Plan which was adopted by the General Assembly.

ADEFOP member countries : Morocco, Benin, Burkina-Faso, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Djibouti, Gabon, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal , Chad, Togo, Ghana, South Sudan, Central African Republic, Congo Brazzaville and Madagascar.
